What is a compression spring
We supply a comprehensive range of springs to our clients and among the most commonly requested custom solutions are our custom compression springs.
What is a compression spring?
A compression spring is an open-coil spring that opposes any compressive force that is applied to it. In most cases, these springs are coiled at a constant and uniform diameter. Across applications, compression springs are installed over rods or into circular holes.
How they work
Compression springs function as an elastic coil – when placed under pressure, they shorten in length and store energy. The stored energy helps the springs maintain their form while also opposing the applied pressure. Ultimately, the springs return to their uncompressed length when the compression force is no longer applied.
Compression springs are manufactured in different shapes and sizes to cater to different applications. Some of these compression spring specifications include:
- Barrel (concave)
- Conical
- Hourglass
- Cross-section
- Straight
Compression spring applications
The range of applications that compression springs can be found in is as varied as they are diverse. These include:
- Pens
- Car suspension
- Couches
- Locks
- Mattresses
- Locks
Compression spring advantages
The widespread use of compression springs is due to their very apparent benefits which include:
- Light in weight – Despite the incredible energy they produce, these springs are particularly lightweight.
- Affordable – Most compression springs are manufactured from inexpensive materials and hence are a low-cost solution.
- Flexibility – Compression springs can be used in an almost limitless number of ways.
